As well as having an unique mix of buildings in a variety of elegant architectural styles, the rue de l’Alzette offers many opportunities for shoppers of every budget. This artery which lies at the heart of the city is the longest pedestrian area in Luxembourg and links two squares: the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall Square) and the Place de la Résistance (Resistance Square). The squares – which accommodate numerous outdoor terraces, benches and an underground car park – regularly host events like the weekly market, annual fairs, the Christmas Market, the celebrations of the National Day and flea markets. As well as fashionable shops, visitors to the Rue de l’Alzette will also find artisan and creative makers offering their products and services from a dedicated Pop-up Concept Shop. But if you are looking for the Alzette river you won’t find it because since 1911 it has been completely covered and is running under your feet!
The best way to appreciate the beauty of the buildings in neo-gothic, art deco, art nouveau and post-modern styles of this street is to pick up the “Architectural Walk” brochure from the Escher Infofabrik, 85, rue de l’Alzette.
