After the Carnival festivities, communities across Luxembourg mark the impending end of the cold season by lighting bonfires that symbolically drive away winter. Almost every village organises its own — sometimes even several — Buergbrennen (from the Latin word burere, meaning “to burn”) celebrations, varying in size and character.
In the weeks leading up to the event, wood, straw and garden cuttings — including old Christmas trees — are collected and stacked in an open space to form a large bonfire structure, typically topped with a cross or a symbolic fortress, which is then set alight at nightfall.
For ten years, the Burgbrennen had disappeared from Esch’s events calendar before five local associations revived the tradition in 2025. The strong public response to its return encouraged the organisers to continue.
This year, the spectacular event will take place in the magical nature reserve of Ellergronn. Come and join the local community in this vibrant ritual that celebrates renewal, togetherness and the long-awaited arrival of spring!
When: Sunday 22 February
Where: Ellergronn Nature Reserve (accessible via Rue Jean-Pierre Bausch)
Time: 3:00 pm with the bonfire lit at nightfall (expected at around 6:00 pm)
