Since the summer of 2013, the Place de la Résistance, commonly known as « Brillplaz » (an old word for marshy ground), has been given a new look. It now features a series of bronze sculptures symbolising the continents of the world, placed in a formally landscaped garden, the work of Berlin-based landscape architect Kamel Louafi. At the same time, the rows of plane trees that traditionally enclose one side of the square have been kept. The square, which is the beating heart of one of the most multicultural neighbourhoods of Esch, is well loved by local people who sit on the benches or take a stroll along the paths of the urban garden. As you enter the square you cannot miss the grand building that occupies one side. This is the National Museum of Resistance which, since 1956, has been telling the story of Luxembourg’s part in the Second World War through permanent and temporary exhibitions.
