The Esch Pizza (or Pizza Eschoise) is more than just food. It’s a piece of the local attitude to life. Its ingredients reflect the countries from which immigration has taken place in the south of Luxembourg since industrialisation. The pizza itself, with its traditional tomato topping, comes from Italy. The spicy salami and anchovies (anchovies) are very popular in the south of France, Spain and Portugal, while garlic is an old crop that has been cultivated in the region since the Middle Ages at the latest.
The tangy pizza, with spicy salami, anchovies and garlic, has been popular ever since there were pizzerias in the south of Luxembourg. When Esch was European Capital of Culture in 2022, it was named « Escher Pizza » with the help of numerous local pizzaioli.
It is on the menu almost everywhere there are pizzas around Esch. But even if it is, it is almost always prepared on request. Not only in and around Esch, but at more and more addresses in the region.
